While it might seem common knowledge, it is crucial to understand the areas of assessment and the proportion of marks for each question. As a general rule, it is best to spend time studying and answering questions based on their proportional value of the overall mark. If one question is worth 30% and another worth 50%, the 50% question should receive half of your allocated time, the 30% should receive a third of your allocated time etc. in this context allocated time is the amount of time you delegate but you can of course finish early and move onto the following question.
Consult your teachers about what questions are important, and the relative weight of questions. You can also review your study guide or exam guide to understand exactly what is relevant.
Prepare
It is a good idea to revise for your exam at least two weeks prior to the event. This will enable you to understand everything you need to and mentally prepare yourself too. Depending on your study style, working in groups to revise is generally beneficial. Delegate areas of study and revise notes in order to teach the group. Learning to teach is key in fully understanding topics and using information efficiently.
Practice
It is integral that you do as many practice exams as you can bear! Do them in real time and review your answers after you complete each practice exam.
Ace the exam
Make sure you get enough sleep and are mentally ready for the exam. This is very important! Getting yourself into the right state of mind can be tricky but try visualizing yourself performing well and knowing all the answers. Sometimes the nerves can undermine our natural ability, so positive thinking and visualizations go along way!
Reading time is key for getting a head start and mentally mapping out your responses. You should have your answers and a rough idea of what you will say during this time. In the first stages of writing time, you should brainstorm all your response (for multiple choice just mark your initial responses in grey led next to the answer sheet). This will allow you to answer all questions and come back to the more difficult ones later.
It can be tricky to get top marks but once you know your learning style, and have the right tools and strategies, it’s a walk in the park.
